The present Town of Inveraray tourist information dates from the second half of the 18th century. It is one of the earliest and best preserved planned towns in Scotland. In 1743 when the 3rd Duke of Argyll inherited the Argyll Estate he embarked on one of the most ambitious tourist information rebuilding schemes ever undertaken in the Western Highlands.
To the South is Dunoon and the Cowal Peninsula to the South West is Campbeltown and the Mull of Kintyre to the West is Lochgilphead and Dunadd and the Kilmartin Glen to the North and West is Oban via Loch Awe to the North East is Fortwilliam through the dramatic scenery of Glencoe to the East is Loch Lomond and the Trossachs
